Transition (Public Art Proposal 2015)
The silhouette of the Great Lakes, the five sisters as they are commonly called, is an image that we are accustomed to seeing on maps and even company logos. It is an iconic yet easily overlooked emblem of the region. TRANSITION consists of a large silhouette of these lakes, laser-cut from core-ten steel, supported front and back by a customized set of stainless steel trusses. This support structure is as integral to the art work as the image of the lakes themselves, simultaneously evocative of a rail bridge, building scaffold, and a vintage billboard sign. While the evocation of a rail bridge is an obvious nod to the function of the James North GO Station, the allusions to signage and scaffolding will subtly elevate the Great Lakes as a symbol of place, one perpetually in a state of construction and renovation by human deeds. Installed at the new Go Station, TRANSITION will act as both emblematic signage and situational map, and as a kind of monumental gateway at the site. This sculpture is mounted on a 12”diameter metal pole facing the James St. pedestrian entry to the GO Station.
Below are concept drawings and an in-progress maquette. This Proposal was short-listed for the Jamesville GO Station Public Art Competition.
